It is said that in this kitchen, on a normal day, prasad is prepared for about 20 thousand people and on a special day, for about 50 thousand people. 

 

There is no day when a devotee does not get prasad. It is believed that this happens because Goddess Lakshmi herself takes care of this kitchen. The main spread here is rice, but apart from this, Malpua is sometimes offered to Lord Jagannath. 

 

These vegetables are not used

Chhappan bhog thali is also offered to Lord Jagannath. One special thing about this is that some vegetables are not used in this thali. Tomatoes, potatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, beetroot, corn, green peas, carrots, turnips, chillies, coriander, beans, bitter gourd and ladyfinger are not used in the vegetables prepared in the temple kitchen. 

 

only local materials are used

Actually, it is believed that all the ingredients of the Mahaprasad prepared in the temple of Lord Jagannath Ji should be local. This is why foreign vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes are not used here. In the local language, tomatoes are called bilni, which has been given because it was brought here by foreigners.

 

Tomatoes were brought to India by foreigners. In earlier times, it was grown by foreigners only. That is why many vegetables including tomatoes are not used in the temple of Jagannath Puri. Cardamom and cloves are used as spices.
