News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump on Wednesday implemented his threat and imposed an additional 25 per cent duty on Indian goods entering the US. When asked, "Indian officials have said that other countries like China are also buying Russian oil. Why are you blaming only India for these additional sanctions?"

On this, US President Donald Trump said that it has been only 8 hours. Let's see what happens. You will see a lot more... you will see many additional restrictions.

Is there any plan to impose more tariffs on China- asked Trump

When asked, 'Regarding the Indian penalties, do you have any plans to impose more tariffs on China?', US President Donald Trump said, "Maybe. It depends on how we do it. Maybe."

50% duty will be imposed on goods exported to America

Trump has already announced a 25 percent duty on Indian goods which will come into effect from August 7. Whereas after the latest announcement, a 50 percent duty will be imposed on goods exported from India to America from August 27.

The duties that were being imposed on Indian goods before the announcement of US reciprocal duty will also be added. However, medicines and electronics, especially smartphones, have been kept out of the purview of this duty as before. The duties on these goods before April this year will be valid.

America imposed 30 percent duty on China and 15 percent on Turkey

The biggest thing is that in the year 2024, China bought oil worth $62 billion from Russia, while India's purchase was worth $52 billion. Still, Trump is now targeting India instead of China. America has imposed 30 percent duty on China and 15 percent duty on Turkey.

Foreign Ministry hinted at retaliation

The Foreign Ministry has not only expressed strong opposition to this new announcement of the Trump administration but has also hinted at retaliatory action against America.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, 'In recent times, the US has targeted importing oil from Russia. We have already made our position clear in this regard. We take decisions according to our market conditions and the energy security of our 1.4 billion people.

He further said that it is very unfortunate that the US has decided to impose additional tariffs on India for the same work that other countries are doing for their national interests. We believe that this step is inconsistent, unfair and unjust. India will take every necessary action to protect its interests.

India will be out of the competition

Before April this year, Indian footwear was charged an 8% duty, now 50% and 8% i.e. 58% duty will be charged on footwear exported to the US. Exporters say that now it will be very difficult to compete with the rival country in the US market.

The reason is that except Brazil, no other country exporting to America has been imposed a 50 percent duty. Even Trump, who was constantly abusing China till May-June, has imposed only a 30 percent duty on China and now America is also talking about a trade agreement with China.

Sectors like footwear, toys, gems and jewellery will be affected

Due to 20% higher duty than China, American buyers will now start placing orders with China again. For the last three months, only 10% duty was being levied on India due to which American buyers were preferring to buy from India instead of China in sectors like apparel, textile, leather and footwear, toys, gems and jewellery, chemicals, electronics.

India exported goods worth $88 billion to the US

This is the reason why Indian exports to the US in April-June this year increased by 22 percent compared to the same period last year. India exported goods worth $88 billion to the US in the last financial year 2024-25.
