News Topical, Digital Desk : Nowadays, there are many cooking oils available in the market. There are many options like olive, coconut, sunflower, butter, almond, avocado and canola. In such a situation, due to so many options, it becomes very difficult to choose which oil is the best for our health?

To clear this confusion, some scientists from Cambridge University have done a special study. Yes, they tried to find out how different types of oils (Healthy Cooking Oils) affect our body.

Effect of fat present in oil

There are two types of fat found in oil - saturated fat and unsaturated fat. Most people consider saturated fat to be harmful because it can increase the risk of heart diseases, but research has shown that not all saturated fats are the same.

Some saturated fats, which have a slightly different structure (such as those with 15 or 17 carbon atoms), are not harmful to us, in fact they can help prevent diabetes and heart disease. On the other hand, some other saturated fats can increase the risk of these diseases.

Olive, coconut and butter: what effect does each have?

Scientists conducted a test on 96 people. They gave them all different oils to eat in a fixed quantity every day for 4 weeks. Some were given olive oil, some coconut oil and some butter. Then they did a blood test of these people and saw what kind of changes these oils brought about in their bodies.

  • Coconut oil increased the amount of a specific type of fat (medium-chain saturated fat).
  • The 15 and 17 carbon fatty acids increased in those who consumed butter, which are considered somewhat good for health.
  • Olive oil increased the amount of a fat called oleic acid the most, which is found in abundance in olives.

Apart from this, there is another fat called linoleic acid, which is found in large quantities in olive oil, but surprisingly, this fat did not increase much in those who consumed olive oil, on the contrary, it increased slightly in those who consumed coconut oil. Now, the clear reason as to why this happened is not known.

Do these changes affect your health?

The level of fatty acids in the blood did change, but it did not have any major direct effect on health. Still, you should definitely pay attention to the two things given below.

  • Those with higher levels of oleic acid in their bodies showed a slight decrease in good cholesterol (HDL).
  • Eating butter increases bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides in the body, which can increase the risk of heart disease.

Each oil has a different effect

This research makes it clear that every oil has a different effect and not all fats are the same. Therefore, whenever you choose an oil, it is important to see which fats are present in it and how they can affect your health. Scientists believe that further research is needed on a larger scale so that more concrete information can be obtained.

What is better for health?

  • If you want to take care of your health, especially your heart health, try:
  • Choose an oil that is low in saturated and trans fats, such as olive oil.
  • Use coconut oil and butter occasionally and in small quantities only.
