Nutrients in Sugarcane Juice

Sugarcane juice is rich in natural sugar (sucrose), which is high in carbohydrates. 100 ml of sugarcane juice can contain about 13-15 grams of sugar. It does not contain fiber, because the fiber gets separated while extracting the juice. Apart from this, some amount of minerals like calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium are also found in it , but due to the high amount of sugar, it is not considered beneficial for diabetic patients.

 

Glycemic Index (GI) of Sugarcane Juice

The glycemic index (GI) of sugarcane juice is around 43-65, which falls in the medium to high range. However, it does not contain fiber. Therefore, this sugar is absorbed quickly in the blood and can suddenly increase the blood glucose level. This can be dangerous for diabetic patients, as their body is unable to use insulin properly.

 

Can diabetic patients ever drink sugarcane juice?

In general, diabetic patients should avoid sugarcane juice, as it can increase their blood sugar. However, if a patient's sugar level is well controlled and he wants to drink sugarcane juice in small quantities occasionally, he can do so after consulting a doctor or dietician. It is important to keep some things in mind-

 

  • Drink in very small quantities - no more than half a glass.
  • Don’t drink on an empty stomach – take a small quantity after eating to slow down the absorption of sugar.
  • Eat a fibre-rich diet: If you drink juice, eat fibre-rich foods (like salad or nuts) along with it .
