News Topical, Digital Desk : Iran's nuclear program has been in the global headlines for a long time. On this basis, Israel launched its biggest military attack on Iran so far in the early hours of Friday. Nuclear installations and military camps were targeted in this attack. Israel claims that Iran's nuclear program is becoming a threat to the Middle East.
This attack created a stir around the world, as many countries, including the US, believe that Iran's program is not yet in the direction of making weapons. Still, Iran's uranium enrichment and its ban on international inspections have raised suspicions. Only after this did Israel take such a step.
When did Iran's nuclear journey begin?
Iran's nuclear program began in 1957 with US support. Then, under the rule of the Shah, its purpose was peaceful energy. After the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the US stopped supporting it and only after this, questions started being raised about Iran's intentions regarding nuclear weapons.
Iran has signed the United Nations' Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In this, Iran promised not to make nuclear weapons. But Iran enriched uranium at a high level. This increased the world's concerns.
What is uranium enrichment?
Uranium enrichment is a process in which the amount of uranium-235 is increased. 3-5% enrichment is sufficient for power generation, but 90% is required for nuclear weapons. Iran has advanced centrifuge machines. With the help of this machine, enrichment can be done rapidly. Iran claims that its program is only for energy, but the restrictions imposed by Iran on international inspections and high enrichment have increased the scope of doubt.
Why is Israel worried?
Israel's attack can further deepen regional tensions. If Iran moves towards nuclear weapons, the balance of power in the Middle East can deteriorate. This is also important for the global community because it can endanger not only regional but also global peace.
