News Topical, Digital Desk : A report on unemployment has come out before Diwali. The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation released this report on Wednesday. According to this report, the unemployment rate for people aged 15 and above increased slightly to 5.2 percent in September.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the unemployment rate was 5.1 per cent in August, 5.2 per cent in July and 5.6 per cent in May and June.

According to the first Periodic Labour Force Survey bulletin released in May 2025, the UR was 5.1 per cent in April. "The unemployment rate among persons aged 15 years and above increased marginally to 5.2 per cent in September 2025 from 5.1 per cent recorded in August 2025, after declining in the last two consecutive months," an official statement said.

According to the survey, an increase in the unemployment rate in rural areas among persons aged 15 years and above (from 4.3 per cent in August 2025 to 4.6 per cent in September 2025) and a slight increase in the unemployment rate in urban areas (from 6.7 per cent in August 2025 to 6.8 per cent in September 2025) contributed to this increase in the overall unemployment rate.

The unemployment rate among urban women aged 15 and above increased from 8.9 percent in August 2025 to 9.3 percent in September 2025. This increase in the unemployment rate among rural women also contributed to the increase in the overall female unemployment rate from 5.2 percent in August 2025 to 5.5 percent in September, the report said.  

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in rural areas also increased from 56.1 per cent in June to 57.4 per cent in September. The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) among women aged 15 years and above increased for the third consecutive month. It increased from 30.2 per cent in June to 32.3 per cent in September. The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in rural areas also increased from 56.1 per cent in June to 57.4 per cent in September. It remained unchanged at 50.9 per cent in urban areas compared to August for persons aged 15 years and above.
