News Topical, Digital Desk : India, the country of Buddha, always believes in peace, but for its strategic security it also follows the principle of 'bhay bin hoy na preet'. To keep its borders safe, it is also purchasing the necessary defence weapons with self-reliance under the Make in India campaign in the defence sector without hesitation.

This is the reason why it has been among the top countries in terms of defence imports for the past several years. The recent report of SIPRI shows that India is the second largest arms importing country in the world. The world saw the ugly face of these efforts of India during Operation Sindoor.

SIPRI report

According to the report of the International Security Think Tank 'Stockholm International Peace Research Institute' (SIPRI), Ukraine imported the most weapons in 2020-24. Ukraine imported almost 100 times more weapons than in 2015-19.

Most of these weapons have been given as aid. Ukraine has been fighting a war against Russia since 2022. Western countries are giving it full support. About 35 countries have given it weapons as aid. Ukraine's share in total arms imports was 8.8 percent.

There has been a huge drop in Chinese imports

India's share in total arms imports was 8.3 percent. Out of the 162 countries importing arms, only five countries had a share of 35 percent in total arms imports. China's arms imports saw a decline of two-thirds in 2020-24 compared to 2015-19.

China has been among the top arms importers for decades. China's arms imports have declined as China expands its domestic arms production capabilities.

America tops arms exporters

According to SIPRI, in 2020-24, the share of the 25 largest arms suppliers was 98 percent in the total global export of arms. The US was the largest exporter of arms. Its share in global arms export was 43 percent. France was the second largest arms exporting country with a share of 9.6. Russia stood third in terms of arms export.
