India has achieved a historic milestone in its defence capability by successfully testing a 30 kilowatt laser-based weapon system for the first time. Through this system, India on Sunday demonstrated its ability to shoot down fixed wing aircraft, missiles and swarm drones. With this success, India has now joined the elite list of countries like the US, Russia and China, which have successfully demonstrated such laser weapon technology.
"We are the 4th or 5th country in the world"
Speaking on the achievement, Dr Sameer V Kamat, Chairman, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), said, "As far as I am aware, the US, Russia and China have demonstrated such capability. Israel is also working on it. I can say we are the fourth or fifth country in the world to have successfully demonstrated this system."
Along with this, Dr. Sameer V Kamat also gave information on India's first 5th generation stealth fighter aircraft, Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). He said, “No such project anywhere in the world is completed in less than 10 to 15 years. We started this journey in 2024, when CCS approved this project. Our target is to have this aircraft ready by 2035.”
He said that India also wants to start a new aero engine program and for this there is a plan to collaborate with a foreign company (OEM) so that the risks involved in development can be reduced. He said that AERO engine technology is a very complex technology, however we have learned a lot from the Kaveri engine. Kaveri was a fourth generation engine, but now the technology has reached the sixth generation. We hope that we can get some good news on this in the next few months.
What is special about laser based weapon system?
- The 30 kW laser weapon system is designed to counter aerial threats such as drones and helicopters within a range of 5 kilometres.
- It has advanced electronic warfare capabilities, including jamming of communications and satellite signals.
- It can be used both on land and ships.
- This has increased India's defence capabilities in many domains.
Big achievement for DRDO
Dr Jagannatha Nayak, Director, Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), DRDO also spoke on the occasion, "What we have achieved today is a huge success. We saw that we neutralised fixed wing aircraft at long range, and also shot down swarm drones. This is a new and emerging weapon system. It is a 'massless' weapon in which the focused laser light falls on the target and neutralises it. This is a huge achievement for our country and DRDO."
