News Topical, Digital Desk: A DMK MP from the ruling party in Tamil Nadu has made a controversial statement about women. He compared women in North India to those in Tamil Nadu, sparking an uproar. He said that in North India, women's work is limited to cooking and caring for children, while in Tamil Nadu, women are given complete freedom to study and work.
DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, who is elected to the Lok Sabha from Chennai Central for the fourth time, made this statement during his address at the Quaid-e-Millat Government College. His statement has sparked controversy. Many have criticized Dayanidhi's statement.
Controversial statement by DMK MP
According to Dayanidhi Maran, "Girls in our state walk around with confidence, laptops in hand. They are seen pursuing post-graduation and giving interviews. Girls in Tamil Nadu develop this confidence because we educate them. But what about North India? Women there don't go out to work. They take care of the home, kitchen, and children. That's their job."
Dayanidhi Stalin further said-
This is Tamil Nadu, a Dravidian state, the state of Kalaignar (former CM M. Karunanidhi), Anna (former CM C.N. Annadurai), and M.K. Stalin (current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu). Here, the progress of the common people means the progress of the state. This is why many companies from around the world move to Chennai because everyone here is educated. People here know Tamil as well as English. The government has also played a significant role in the advancement of women.
Deputy CM distributed laptops
Chief Minister Stalin's son and state Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin was also present at the event. He distributed laptops to the female students. Addressing the gathering, Udhayanidhi Stalin said, "I am very happy to give you all laptops today. I wish everyone a Happy New Year and Pongal. We are proud of our female students. In 1974, Karunanidhi named this college and dedicated it to women."
BJP raised questions
Dayanidhi Maran's statement has sparked a political debate. BJP spokesperson Narayanan Tirupati targeted Maran, saying, "Dayanidhi Maran has once again abused the people of North India. I wonder why he is allowed to make such statements? This has become commonplace in the DMK. I don't think Dayanidhi Maran has any common sense."
Gave a befitting reply to Maran
BJP leader Anil Singh called Maran's statement "unfortunate." She said, "Maran is forgetting that he lives in India and that India worships power. If he thinks he can divide power between north, south, east, and west, then he doesn't understand this country's culture. What is his opinion about Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and our honorable President Draupadi Murmu? This divisive politics will not work in this country."
DMK came out in support of Maran
The DMK has issued a clarification supporting Maran's statement. Party spokesperson TKS Elangovan said, "The development of women depends on who is in power in a state. Women are empowered in Congress-ruled states. They are working for women's education and empowerment. In Tamil Nadu, there is also a focus on providing good education to women. However, in North India, there is no one to fight for women's rights."
