News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump has once again threatened Canada with tariffs. He said he would impose 100 percent tariffs on Canada if it enters into a trade deal with China. He also sharply criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that if he thinks he can make Canada a drop-off port for China so that China can send goods and products to America, then he is making a big mistake.

'Tariffs will be imposed immediately'

"If Canada makes a deal with China, there will be an immediate 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and products coming into the United States," he said.

Trump further said, "China will eat Canada alive, swallow it whole. Their businesses, social fabric, and way of life will all be destroyed."

Canada strikes a deal with China

Canada has tried to reduce its dependence on the US by making a historic deal with China under a new strategic partnership.

"Canada and China have reached an initial but significant trade agreement to remove trade barriers and reduce tariffs," Carney told a press conference after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Under the deal, China will reduce tariffs on canola products from the current 84 percent to about 15 percent by March 1. China will allow Canadian travelers to enter the country without a visa.

In return, Canada will import 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) under a new concessional tariff of 6.1 percent.
