News Topical, Digital Desk : Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis said he will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Education Minister to rename IIT Bombay to IIT Mumbai . Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, was officially renamed Mumbai by the state government in 1995 in honor of Mumba Devi and to erase the imprint of British colonial rule.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh commented on the name

IIT Bombay made headlines when Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh visited the site and commented on its name. He said, "As far as IIT Bombay is concerned, thankfully, it still has the same name. You haven't changed it to Mumbai. So that's another compliment for you. And the same is true for Madras. It's still IIT Madras."

MNS chief Raj Thackeray was furious

MNS chief Raj Thackeray took aim at the Union Minister's statement. In an X-post, he said that Marathi leaders and the public had foiled the conspiracy to separate Mumbai, which has always belonged to Marathi people, from Maharashtra. He said, "Our Marathi Mumbai remained in Maharashtra. The bitterness that had been simmering in their hearts for decades is now coming out again." He added, "The people of Mumbai and all Marathi people living in the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region should now open their eyes.

There is definitely an attempt to capture the city – Thackeray

Raj Thackeray said that the name Mumbai bothers them (the ruling party) because it is named after the goddess of Mumbai, Mumba Devi. Her descendants are Marathi people who have lived here for generations. Thackeray said that the central government tried to take Chandigarh from Punjab's control, but backed down after opposition from all other parties. He said that the withdrawal was temporary. He said, "Something similar is going on in the case of Mumbai. There is definitely an attempt to take over the city. First Mumbai and then the entire MMR region will be taken over and merged with Gujarat. Marathi people should wake up."
