A heart attack is a medical emergency, and recovery from it is crucial. People often think that once they're discharged from the hospital, everything is fine, but the real journey begins after that.

Why are the first 90 days important?

Often, after a heart attack, people assume everything is fine once they're discharged from the hospital. However, the truth is that the first three months are known as the "golden window of recovery." This is the time when the body heals, the heart muscle strengthens, and the risk of a second attack is highest. Research suggests that proper rehabilitation and lifestyle changes during this time can reduce the risk of a second heart attack by approximately 25–30%.

Regular checkup is necessary

The most important thing immediately after returning home from the hospital is regular follow-up with your doctor. Regular blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, and heart rate checks are crucial. Additionally, medications such as blood thinners, beta-blockers, or statins should never be missed. Sometimes, people stop taking them willy-nilly, increasing the risk of serious complications.

Blood pressure and sugar should also be monitored and recorded at home. This practice not only helps the doctor but also gives the patient a sense of control over their health.

Many people shy away from exercise after a heart attack due to fear, but light activity, as advised by a doctor, strengthens the heart. You can start with short walks or climbing stairs. Gradually, as your body's capacity increases, you can increase the amount of exercise. The rule is to listen to your body; if you experience chest pain, dizziness, or unusual fatigue, stop immediately.

Mental and emotional health

A heart attack can be devastating not only to the body but also to the mind. Fear, anxiety, and depression are common during this time, but if ignored, recovery can be slow.

Counseling, support groups, or techniques like meditation and yoga can help maintain mental balance. Family members should also avoid imposing excessive restrictions on the patient, but instead encourage and encourage them.

Lifestyle changes

These early months are a great time to make lifestyle adjustments. Quitting smoking and alcohol, getting enough sleep,  managing stress  , and paying attention to weight are essential. Working individuals can gradually return to the office, but it's best to initially focus on lighter tasks and less stressful responsibilities.

The role of family

Recovery after a heart attack isn't a one-on-one process. Family and caregivers play a crucial role. Ensuring the patient receives their medications on time, taking them to the doctor, and sharing walks or healthy meals together can give them confidence.

After 90 days

Remember, completing three months isn't the end of recovery, but rather a new beginning. If patients adopt regular medication, a healthy diet, exercise, and stress management during this time, their future life can be better and longer.
