A 19-year-old youth has accused the police of torturing him in custody at Sohra police station in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The youth was also made to drink toilet water in the police station. Officials informed on Monday that the youth has been seriously injured due to torture in custody.

Why was the youth taken into custody?

According to the information received, this entire incident has come to light from Sohra police station in East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The youth was detained a few days ago due to a quarrel involving another youth. The youth's mother has complained to the Superintendent of Police about her son being tortured. The youth's mother said that on July 3, the police came in search of her son. According to officials, she went to Sohra police station with her son at around nine in the morning.

What did the woman say in the complaint?

The woman said in her complaint, "I was shocked to see my son coming out of the police station in the afternoon seriously injured. I immediately took him to Sohra CHC, from where he was referred to Shillong Civil Hospital. He has been hospitalized since then. If my son had committed a crime, proper procedure should have been followed. He had to endure third-degree torture in the police station before being released. His human rights have been violated."

The young man narrated his ordeal

The youth has given information about this entire incident. Narrating his ordeal, the youth said that after taking him into custody, the police beat him and then threw him in jail. The youth said- "When I asked for water, they refused. I was forced to drink water from the toilet." The police department has started an investigation in this case
