
News Topical, Digital Desk : India said it carried out air strikes on nine places in Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday in retaliation for the killing of 26 people, mostly tourists, in Baisaran in Pahalgam on April 22, for which it blamed Pakistan.

Pakistan said it was in the process of responding to Indian missile attacks. India's latest action adds to the long list of military conflicts between the nuclear-armed neighbours. There have been several instances of conflict between the two countries.
1947: First War over Kashmir Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan were born in August 1947, when the British relinquished colonial control over the subcontinent, and months later the two new countries were at war for control of the scenic Himalayan region of Kashmir. Pakistan occupies a portion of Jammu and Kashmir.
1965: The second war between India and Pakistan takes place over Kashmir. In an attempt to gain control of Kashmir, Pakistani forces enter Indian territory, prompting India to cross the border and launch a military invasion. The war involved fierce ground and air combat, as well as some of the largest tank battles in history.
1971: War over East Pakistan - The neighbours fought their third war over the eastern part of Pakistan. Thousands were killed in the conflict, which ended with India helping to separate the region. Pakistan was defeated and the independent country of Bangladesh was formed.
1999: Kargil War- The two countries clashed in the high-altitude region of Kargil after Pakistani troops infiltrated Kashmir. This was the first clash between the two countries after they officially acquired nuclear weapons capability. India launched Operation Vijay to foil Pakistan's attempt to capture several places in India, including Kargil, and the Indian Army was successful.
2016: Uri attack - "Surgical strikes" were carried out on alleged Islamic terrorist launchpads in Pakistani territory after militants attacked an Indian military base in the Uri region of Kashmir.
2019: Pulwama attack - India carried out an airstrike on a terrorist training camp near the Pakistani town of Balakot in response to a suicide attack on a CRPF convoy in the Pulwama region of Kashmir.
