This has become a common practice among foreign leaders seeking to influence Trump, and in recent months several leaders have supported his nomination or at least promised to do so. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has also nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump is visiting Japan, one of America's strongest allies in Asia. Trump is trying to secure US$550 billion in Japanese investment as part of a trade deal that would reduce US tariffs. During his meeting with Trump on Tuesday, Takaichi said Japan would give Washington 250 cherry trees to commemorate America's 250th anniversary next year and would also set off fireworks in Akita Prefecture for the July 4 celebrations.

Agreement on rare minerals

Trump described Takaichi's role as Japan's first female prime minister as a "big deal" and emphasized America's commitment to Japan. "We will always be ready to help Japan. We are allies at the strongest level," Trump said. Trump and Takaichi signed an agreement that outlines a framework for ensuring the supply of critical minerals and rare earths.

Trump is on a tour of Asia

US President Donald Trump arrived in Tokyo, the Japanese capital, on Monday, where he met with the emperor as part of a formal visit. Earlier, Trump was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he attended the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
