News Topical, Digital Desk : Kidney Health In Men: Nowadays, many men pay special attention to their strength and fitness. Going to the gym, building muscles, and taking care of their heart health are their priorities. But in this race, kidney health, a vital part of health, often gets overlooked. An early and very silent sign of kidney problems is the presence of protein in the urine, which is medically known as proteinuria.

Proteinuria may not show any obvious symptoms in the early stages, but it can be a sign of underlying kidney damage. If left unaddressed, it can lead to serious complications. According to Dr. Manish Jain, Senior Director of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant at Medanta, Gurugram, men often fail to recognize this hidden symptom. He explains why.

How do kidneys work?

The kidneys are our body's filtering system. They filter impurities and excess fluid from the blood and excrete them through urine. They also play a vital role in regulating blood pressure, maintaining electrolyte balance, and producing red blood cells. In healthy kidneys, specialized filters (glomeruli) ensure that large particles, such as proteins, do not pass into the urine.

What is proteinuria and why is it dangerous?

When these kidney filters begin to malfunction, protein begins to be excreted in the urine. If this condition persists for a long time, it can be dangerous to ignore. Initially, there may be no symptoms, which is why it's also known as silent kidney disease. However, as the damage progresses, symptoms such as swelling of the feet and ankles, fatigue, foamy urine, and frequent urination at night may appear.

Why do men have more problems?

Men are more likely to develop high blood pressure at a younger age, which is a major cause of kidney damage. Men are also at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which damages the kidneys over time. An enlarged prostate can also obstruct the urinary tract, putting pressure on the kidneys. Lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and consuming processed foods and red meat also prove harmful to the kidneys. Ignoring symptoms can delay diagnosis and treatment.

How to recognize proteinuria?

Diagnosis doesn't require any complex tests. A simple urine test can detect protein in the urine. If protein is found, doctors may order further tests, such as a spot urine protein-creatinine ratio, a 24-hour urine test, and blood tests to assess kidney function.

Easy ways to keep your kidneys healthy

Keeping blood pressure and blood sugar under control is crucial for kidney health. If you have any kidney-related problems, consult your doctor for medication, a healthy diet, and regular exercise. Maintain weight control, as obesity increases the risk of both high blood pressure and diabetes. Limit processed foods, excess red meat, and sugary beverages in your daily diet and include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Additionally, schedule regular health checkups.
