News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who were once very close, are at loggerheads again. Trump on Tuesday claimed that Tesla CEO Elon Musk's business will not be able to run without government subsidies. If subsidies are not received, Musk will probably have to close his shop and return to South Africa.
He said that the government efficiency department should review the subsidies given to Musk's companies. The US President's remarks came after Musk's statement in which he again strongly criticized Trump's tax bill and threatened to remove lawmakers from office who supported the bill.
'You cannot be forced to buy an electric car'
"Elon Musk knew I was against EV mandates long before he endorsed me for president. That was a key part of my campaign. Electric cars are great, but not everyone should be forced to buy them," Trump said on Truth Social.
He said, "Alan has received more subsidies than any other person in history. Without subsidies Alan would probably have to close up shop and return home to South Africa. There would be no more rockets, satellite launches or electric car production and our country would save a huge amount of money. The government efficiency department should look into this. A huge amount of money could be saved."
Musk criticized the Big Beautiful Bill
According to news agency Reuters, earlier on Monday, Musk, the CEO of electric vehicle maker Tesla, again strongly criticized Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' on X and emphasized that a new political party is needed, which cares about the people. He told the lawmakers who supported the bill that they should hang their heads in shame.
He resigned in May
Last May too, he had criticized the 'Big Beautiful Bill' and resigned from the post of head of Trump's government efficiency department. After this, a war of words broke out between the two. Trump had threatened to end all contracts with Musk's companies and said that Musk disappointed me. He has got 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'. Whereas Musk had said that if I were not there, Trump would have lost the election.
He had accused Trump of infidelity. The two came close during the presidential election last year and Trump made him the head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk had contributed $300 million to support Trump's presidential candidacy.
Republican lawmakers are gathering support for Trump bill
The debate on Trump's ambitious 'Big Beautiful Bill' related to tax exemption and spending cuts continued in the upper house of the US Parliament on Tuesday as well. Earlier on Monday, in the overnight tumultuous session, while Republican MPs were seen trying to garner support in the House, the opposition Democrat members were seen trying to defeat the bill.
However, it is not yet clear how long the voting process on the bill will take in the 100-member House. This bill has already been passed by the lower house of Parliament, the House of Representatives.
