News Topical, Digital Desk : The path to transforming Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, into a solar city, as per Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath 's vision, was further paved on Monday. The state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, approved the installation of a 20-megawatt floating solar power plant in Chiluataal. Previously, two floating solar power plants have been installed in the state.

A 20 MW floating solar power plant has been installed by NTPC in Auraiya, and another 11 MW floating solar power plant has been installed by THDC in Khurja. The Gorakhpur floating solar power plant will be installed by Coal India Limited.

The plant will be built on the waves of Chiluatal.

A plan to install a floating solar power plant on the waves of Chiluataal in Gorakhpur is soon to be implemented. This is being seen as a result of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's determined efforts to transform Gorakhnagari into a solar city. The 20-megawatt floating solar power plant, to be installed by Coal India Limited, a major public sector enterprise, will cost ₹140 crore. This project will generate 33.29 million units of green energy annually.

Emphasis on environmental protection

To meet energy needs and protect the environment, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's emphasis is on clean and green energy. In light of this, the government is continuously promoting solar plants. In this regard, the Chief Minister directed officials to develop Chiluataal in Gorakhpur as an important center for solar energy production. The Chief Minister believes that establishing a floating power plant on the water surface in Chiluataal could prove effective. When efforts were initiated, Coal India Limited expressed interest.

20 MW floating panels will be installed

According to the project, Coal India Limited will install 20 megawatts of floating solar panels on the waves of Chiluatal. Coal India published an e-bid for this project on December 19, 2025. The deadline for submitting bids is March 23, 2026, and the tender will open on March 24, 2026, at 11 a.m. The floating solar panels at Chiluatal will be installed on special fibers that will not deteriorate in water.

The project aims to generate 38.54 million units of electricity annually. The floating solar power plant's control unit will be built near the boundary wall of Hindustan Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (HURL).

Green energy will be fed into the grid

The floating solar power plant to be installed in Chiluatal will generate a minimum of 33.29 million units of green energy annually. This, after being fed into the grid, will help meet Gorakhpur's energy demand. This project will promote both employment and environmental protection.
