News Topical, Digital Desk : Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was arrested by federal police on Saturday before he could begin serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup. He had been placed under house arrest for weeks before his conviction in a coup trial in early August.

Bolsonaro's aide, Andrely Cirino, confirmed his arrest, saying it occurred around 6 a.m. Saturday. He said the 70-year-old former president was taken from his home in the Jardim Botanico neighborhood to the federal police headquarters in the capital, Brasilia.

What were the lawyers appealing ?

Police said in a statement that they acted at the behest of the Supreme Court. However, the statement did not mention Bolsonaro by name. Bolsonaro's lawyers had been appealing to the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his sentence at home, citing his poor health.

However, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the coup case, like most of his colleagues, rarely delivers a verdict on Saturday unless there is a security threat.
