News Topical, Digital Desk : While the health condition of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is "extremely critical," political violence is escalating in Bangladesh under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus ahead of the February 2026 elections.
As a result, 25 people were injured in a violent election campaign between activists of the Bangladesh National Democratic Alliance (BNP) and the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami (JIMA). These political parties, which clashed with each other during the election campaign, had previously collaborated with Yunus to overthrow the democratically elected government of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League.
Khaleda Zia's condition is critical
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, 80, was hospitalized Sunday night after suffering a chest infection that affected her heart and lungs, according to the state news agency BSS. "According to doctors, her condition is extremely critical," BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.
The BNP held special prayers after Friday prayers for the speedy recovery of the party chairperson. Zia returned to the country from London on May 6 after four months of treatment. Khaleda Zia, wife of slain Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman, suffers from several health complications, including kidney problems, diabetes, arthritis and eye ailments.
Violence broke out between workers of both parties
According to IANS, violence broke out between workers of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami during election campaigning in Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon in Char Gargari village of Pabna district.
When Jamaat candidate Abu Talib Mandal went to the area to campaign, he was stopped by supporters of the BNP candidate. Mandal left after a scuffle, but on his return, violence erupted, with gunfire and damage to several vehicles.
