fraudulently deceived
A family from Mohaddipur in the Cantonment police station area arranged a marriage for their daughter to an IAS officer through the Nishad Matrimony WhatsApp group and fell victim to fraud. The victim told police that when contacted about the marriage, Pritam claimed to be an IAS officer and claimed to be posted in Manipur. To gain confidence, he also sent photos and videos of himself in his office, allegedly from interviews with news channels, and with certain politicians.
After sending the proposal, the fake IAS officer, Pritam, said he would marry without dowry, but the girl must be of his choice. They fell for his deception, believing they were getting a fake IAS son-in-law. Driven by this temptation, they immediately agreed to the proposal. After the engagement, a wedding date was set. Three days before the engagement, the fake officer demanded 15 lakh rupees as expenses.
Gave 10 lakh rupees in cash at the engagement
The girl's father told the police that, out of compulsion, the family gave 10 lakh rupees in cash on the day of the engagement, and the remaining 5 lakh rupees during the Tilak ceremony on the wedding day. The accused IAS officer then said, "Please give me all the household items later, as I am posted abroad." The wedding took place with great pomp on March 11, 2026, at the Durga Marriage Lawn in Nandanagar, where the victim spent approximately 30 lakh rupees. Accommodation for the wedding party was arranged at a hotel in Mohaddipur.
The victim told the police that after the wedding procession left on March 12th, a guest at the wedding informed her that the young man was not an IAS officer. He had married a fake IAS officer. Upon arriving at the address provided, the family found their daughter in a small room, while the accused, Pritam, and his sister fled the scene.
