News Topical, Digital Desk : If you suddenly feel dizzy after getting up from a chair, darkness in front of your eyes or a feeling of falling, then do not take it lightly. This is a common problem, but there may be a medical reason behind it. This condition is called orthostatic hypotension or posture hypotension. This happens when the body is unable to adjust the blood pressure quickly after suddenly standing up from a sitting or lying position and not enough blood is able to reach the brain. This is the reason why you start feeling dizzy, blurred vision or fainting.
What do experts say?
According to Dr. Abhishek Kumar, a neurologist at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi, as soon as we stand up, gravity causes blood to rush to the legs. Normally, the body's autonomic nervous system immediately compensates by constricting the nerves and increasing the heart rate. However, if this response is slowed down, dizziness can occur. According to a dietitian and weight management expert, standing causes blood to pool in the legs, which reduces oxygen supply to the brain. Drinking plenty of water, maintaining electrolyte balance, and standing slowly can alleviate this problem.
Why does this happen?
Dehydration, anemia, prolonged bed rest, certain medications, and the body's reduced reflexes associated with aging can also cause dizziness. Research has also shown that a sudden drop in blood pressure within the first minute of standing may be associated with an increased risk of dementia. People whose systolic blood pressure dropped by 20 mmHg or more within 30 seconds of standing were found to have a higher risk of developing dementia in the future.
When is it necessary to see a doctor?
Experts say that if a person repeatedly feels dizzy upon standing, they should inform their doctor and have their blood pressure checked. This can increase the risk of falls, broken bones, and serious injuries, especially in the elderly. To prevent this, it's important to stand slowly, drink plenty of water, exercise your feet, make slip-resistant arrangements at home, and, if necessary, have your medication reviewed by a doctor. With timely attention, this problem can be largely controlled. With lifestyle changes, we can overcome it.
