News Topical, Digital Desk : "Your sugar is perfectly normal, Doctors says this phrase is one of the most misleading and deceptive in the medical field. In a post on the social media platform X, he explained that we often assume we don't have diabetes based on just one test, but the truth can be quite different.
Doctor shares story of 48-year-old patient
To illustrate this point, Dr. Sudhir Kumar cited the case of a 48-year-old patient. According to him, the patient had been suffering from burning sensations in his feet for the past six months, which worsened at night. Several doctors examined him and diagnosed him with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy (a nerve disease with an unknown cause).
This was because his fasting blood sugar was 94 mg/dL. Based on this single reading, doctors assumed he didn't have diabetes and ruled it out. However, when the patient was examined in more detail and given an HbA1c test, the result was 7.1%. In reality, the patient had a nerve disease caused by diabetes, called diabetic neuropathy .
The biggest mistake is relying only on fasting sugar.
The doctor says this case raises a major problem. We're relying too much on fasting blood sugar, which is completely unfair:
- Fasting sugar only reflects the current situation at the time the test is taken. It doesn't give the full picture.
- The initial damage to the body is caused by the sudden increase in sugar after eating food.
- The things that get hidden in the fasting sugar test are clearly revealed by the HbA1c test .
In many patients, even though their fasting sugar levels are 'normal', their nerves are already damaged.
A bitter truth that needs to be known
The doctor clearly states that this may seem a bit controversial, but it's true that fasting blood sugar is the least effective test for detecting early diabetes. The reality is that by the time your fasting sugar starts to rise, the damage to the body has already begun.
What is the doctor's advice?
If someone is experiencing unexplained vein problems or symptoms that are unclear, they shouldn't rely solely on one number: fasting blood sugar . In such cases, HbA1c and post-meal blood sugar should also be checked.
