News Topical, Digital Desk : Trans-Atlantic trade relations have been plunged into new uncertainty after the US Supreme Court invalidated President Donald Trump's tariff program. The European Union has sought a formal clarification from the Trump administration and demanded that the US demonstrate its full commitment to the court's order.

It is noteworthy that on Friday, the Supreme Court struck down the Trump administration's tariff program by a 6-3 majority. The court held that the president had overstepped his authority. The European Commission said that the spirit of the EU-US joint statement signed between the two sides in August last year appears to be weakened in the current situation.

What provision was decided?

According to the Commission, a stable policy framework is essential for fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trans-Atlantic trade and investment. Under the trade agreement reached last year, a 15 percent import duty was imposed on about 70 percent of European products exported to the US.

It is noteworthy that the European Union, consisting of 27 member countries, collectively conducts trade policy and is one of the largest integrated markets in the world. Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, said on Sunday that he would propose to the negotiating team to stop the ratification process of this agreement.

According to him, "The situation is unclear, many questions remain unresolved, and uncertainty is growing." Bilateral trade between the US and the EU is approximately $2 trillion annually. Analysts say that if the tariff dispute drags on, it could have direct impacts on the automobile, aerospace, agriculture, and technology sectors.

What did the European Commission say?

The European Commission stated clearly, "A compromise is a compromise. As the US's largest trading partner, the EU expects the commitments set out in the Joint Statement to be respected. European products must continue to receive competitive treatment and tariffs must not be raised beyond the limits already set."
