New Delhi: Politics and cinema are two such areas in which high-voltage drama is expected. The trend of making films on political agenda is quite old in the industry. The new name added to this is Kangana Ranaut's movie Emergency. But due to huge controversy, her movie has been postponed before its release.
However, Kangana Ranaut's Emergency is not the first film that has been postponed due to political noise. Even before this, there have been many such films of Hindi cinema that fell prey to politics and were disliked by politicians.
The story of the chair
The film Kissa Kursi Ka starring actors like Shabana Azmi, Raj Babbar and Surekha Sikri proved to be a controversial political drama film. This movie was completed in 1974 under the direction of director Amrit Nahata. But its release was postponed due to the imposition of emergency in 1975.
During the Emergency, the then government saw this movie and asked for changes in it. Also, its prints were confiscated. Somehow, Kissa Kursi Ka was released in 1978. But there was a lot of discussion about this movie as a political satire.
Aandhi
During the Emergency, Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen's film Aandhi was also ready for release. But director Gulzar's movie was accused of misrepresenting the relationship between the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her husband. However, when Indira's government fell in 1977, the way for the release of Aandhi was cleared.
Black Friday
Director Anurag Kashyap, who has made many great movies like Gangs of Wasseypur, made a film called Black Friday. This film depicted the story of the suicide bombings that took place in Mumbai in the year 1993. There was a lot of uproar regarding its release and in 2004 the Mumbai High Court put a stay on it. After this, this film was released in 2007.
Firaaq
The story of the Gujarat riots of 2002 has been shown in many movies. But Firaaq starring Nandita Das made a lot of headlines on this issue. Due to strong opposition from many organizations, the censor board banned this movie in 2008. Later in 2009, Firaaq was released on the big screen. Apart from Nandita, actors Paresh Rawal and Naseeruddin Shah were an important part of the film.
Indu Sarkar
Before Kangana Ranaut's Emergency, director Madhur Bhandarkar's film Indu Sarkar has shown the story of the Emergency period of 1975 on the big screen. A lot of political mileage was made on this movie. The Congress party strongly opposed the film. However, the release date of Indu Sarkar was not postponed and it was released in theatres in 2017.
Padmavat
There was a lot of uproar on the release of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's blockbuster film Padmavat. Karni Sena had strongly opposed this movie. Seeing the growing controversy, the court postponed the release of this film for about a month. After 1 December 2017, this movie was released on 25 January 2018. Along with the title of the film, some scenes were also changed.
Emergency
Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency was to be released on the big screen on 6 September. But this movie did not get the green signal from the censor board and a petition was filed in the court regarding the emergency by some members of the Sikh community.
It is alleged that the image of the Sikh community has been portrayed in a wrong manner in the film. Currently, the release date of Emergency has been postponed indefinitely.
