News Topical, Digital Desk : Earthquake tremors were felt in India's neighboring country Bangladesh. The tremors were felt in the capital Dhaka and surrounding districts. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 4.1 on the Richter scale. News portal tbsnews.net quoted the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center as saying that the earthquake occurred at 6:14 am local time, with its epicenter in Narsingdi at a depth of 30 kilometers.

No damage reported

There were no reports of damage or casualties due to the earthquake in Bangladesh. Given the shallow depth of the quake, residents in Dhaka and surrounding districts felt only a mild tremor, the news portal reported. According to The Daily Star newspaper, Bangladesh is at risk of a major earthquake because it lies at the junction of three tectonic plates: the Indian, Myanmar, and Eurasian plates.

Dhaka is very vulnerable to earthquakes.

Dhaka is considered one of the 20 most earthquake-prone cities in the world. It is densely populated and has many dilapidated buildings, many of which are in the old part of the capital. The area has a long history of strong earthquakes, with five major tremors exceeding 7.0 on the Richter scale occurring between 1869 and 1930.

Bangladesh and the devastating earthquake

It should be noted that on the afternoon of June 12, 1897, an earthquake measuring over 8 magnitude struck the Assam region of India. Its epicenter was near the Khasi Mountains of Assam, but its effects were felt most strongly in Bangladesh, which was then part of British India. It is considered the largest and most destructive earthquake in Bangladesh's history. The magnitude of this earthquake is estimated to be approximately 8.1 on the Richter scale. Today, such a large earthquake is classified as a Great Earthquake. The earthquake caused ground cracks in many places in Bangladesh.

Thousands of people had died

The 1897 earthquake caused extensive damage to buildings, bridges, and roads in Bangladesh. Thousands of houses collapsed in Sylhet, Mymensingh, Dhaka, and Chittagong. Official casualty figures at the time were limited, but it is believed that thousands of people died and millions were affected.
