The battle between the army and the RSF escalated into a civil war.
Fighting between the army and the RSF escalated in April 2023, spiraling into a civil war that, according to the World Health Organization, has killed at least 40,000 people, displaced more than 1.2 million, and pushed many to the brink of famine. El Fasher has been the epicenter of fighting between the two for more than a year and is the army's last stronghold in the Darfur region.
The heaviest fighting on Thursday was concentrated in the western and southern parts of the city, where residents told the Darfur Victims Support Organization, which monitors abuses against civilians, that they heard loud explosions and saw drones being used, according to a statement from the NGO.
The El Fasher-based Resistance Committee said in a statement on Thursday that the RSF targeted several unarmed civilians, including women and the elderly, in displacement shelters in the city. The group also said on Wednesday that the RSF repeatedly targeted residential areas with heavy artillery.
