News Topical, Digital Desk : Voting is underway today, January 15, 2026, in 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra. Major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Pimpri-Chinchwad are witnessing high-voltage contests. But if you've never voted before, you might be wondering how to go to the polling station and what to do and what not to do?
What are the necessary documents to carry for voting?
Before arriving at the polling station, it's crucial to prove your identity. If you have a Voter ID card (EPIC), be sure to bring it with you. This is the simplest and most basic document. If you don't have your Voter ID, don't worry. The Election Commission has approved several alternative photo documents.
- Aadhar card
- Driving License
- Passport
- PAN card
- MNREGA Job Card (with photo)
- Bank or post office passbook with photo
- Pension documents (with photographs)
- Service Identity Card of Central or State Government employees
- Official identity card of MP, MLA or Legislative Council member
- Smart card issued by the Registrar General of India under NPR
- Health Insurance Smart Card of Ministry of Labour
All of these documents are valid, so choose one when leaving home. Also, if you have a voter information slip, bring it with you. If you don't have one, you can get it at the polling station.
To ensure smooth and safe voting, be mindful of a few things. First, go to your designated polling station. There's no room for changing your polling station. Upon reaching the polling station, stand in line calmly and, when your turn comes, show your documents before casting your vote. In case of emergency, immediately call these numbers: 1916 (election helpline), 112, or 100 (police). These numbers are available 24 hours a day.
If you're voting for the first time or have any doubts, check your polling station in advance. You can find the name and location of your polling station online on the Maharashtra State Election Commission website. It's best to arrive on time to avoid the crowds.
What not to do on voting day?
Certain things are strictly prohibited inside or around the polling station. Violating these rules may result in action. Mobile phones are prohibited. If absolutely necessary, keep the phone switched off and outside or keep it locked in your pocket, but do not use it. Do not carry any flammable items, such as lighters, matches, or sharp objects, such as pocket knives. These are against security.
Do not believe or spread any rumors. Don't be misled by social media or word-of-mouth. Trust only official information. Candidates and their workers cannot campaign or distribute pamphlets within a 100-meter radius. They may go door-to-door to greet people, but this will not be permitted near a polling station.
