People have misconceptions about foods like ghee, eggs, mango, potatoes and white rice (Does ghee cause weight gain). Actually, if they are eaten in the right way and in the right quantity, they not only provide nutrition, but can also help in weight loss. Nutritionist Shweta Chhabra shared a post on social media about this (rice and potato weight myth). Let's break the myths spread about these foods and know their benefits.  

 

Clarified Butter (Ghee)  

  • Myth- "Eating ghee increases obesity and cholesterol."  

Truth- Ghee contains healthy fats, antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), which boost immunity and keep digestion healthy. Butyric acid present in ghee is beneficial for gut health.  

 

How to eat?  

  • Use 1-2 teaspoons of ghee in your food daily.  
  • Eat it by applying it on hot dal, rice or roti.  
  • Use ghee by cooking it on low flame (do not overheat it).  

 

Whole Egg  

  • Myth- "Eating egg yolk increases cholesterol."  

Truth- Choline is found in egg yolk, which is essential for the brain. Also, it contains vitamin D, B12 and healthy fats. Eating it in limited quantity balances hormones and metabolism .  

How to eat?  

  • You can eat 1-2 whole eggs daily.  
  • Make boiled eggs, omelette or bhurji and eat it with vegetables.  
  • Avoid frying in excess oil or butter.

Mango  

  • Myth- "Mango is sweet, it causes weight gain."  

Truth- Mango contains fibre, vitamin C, A and digestive enzymes (amylase), which are good for metabolism and skin health.  

How to eat?  

  • You can eat 1 small mango a day.  
  • Have it as an afternoon or evening snack.  
  • Avoid mixing it with sugar or milk.  

 

white rice  

  • Myth- "Eating rice increases obesity."  

Truth- White rice is gluten-free and an easily digestible carb that provides energy. It is lighter and digests faster than brown rice.  

How to eat?  

  • Eat mixed with protein (lentils, kidney beans, curd).  
  • Do not take more than 1 cup at one time meal.  
  • Avoid fried rice or recipes containing excess ghee and oil.  

 

Potato  

  • Myth- "Potatoes increase obesity."  

Truth- Potatoes contain potassium, vitamin C and fiber . The problem is not with the potatoes, but with deep-frying them (like French fries).  

How to eat?  

  • Eat boiled or roasted potatoes (with the peel).  
  • Eat it mixed with protein (paneer, egg, lentils).  
  • Eating potatoes after workout helps in muscle recovery.
