News Topical, Digital Desk : Severe cold and a cold wave continue to grip northern India. Dense fog engulfed the plains of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, while fresh snowfall occurred in the hilly areas of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. 

Temperatures dropped in many parts of northern India, including the national capital, which recorded its first cold day of the year. According to the Meteorological Department, a cold day is declared when the maximum temperature is 4.5 degrees Celsius to 6.4 degrees Celsius below normal.

Weather condition of major states

Delhi -NCR: Delhi recorded one of the coldest days of the year today. The maximum temperature is expected to hover between 16 °C and 18 °C , while the minimum temperature is expected to hover around 7 °C . The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog.

Uttar Pradesh: Several districts in Uttar Pradesh are experiencing severe cold. Etawah was the coldest place in the state, recording a minimum temperature of 2.6 °C . Due to fog and cold in cities like Varanasi and Noida, schools up to grade 8 have been closed until January 10, 2026.

Madhya Pradesh: Cold wave conditions are affecting several districts of the state. Schools have been declared closed or rescheduled in 16 districts, including the Gwalior-Chambal division. Night temperatures have dropped to 5 °C to 7 °C in many parts.

Kashmir: High altitude areas like Gulmarg and Pahalgam are experiencing heavy snowfall. Temperatures in the valley remain below freezing.

Himachal and Uttarakhand: Light to moderate snowfall is expected in areas like Shimla, Manali, and Badrinath. Ground frost warnings have been issued for parts of Uttarakhand, which could be harmful to crops.

Dense fog has delayed many trains and flights in northern India. Travelers have been advised to check their travel status before leaving home. Given the severe cold, the elderly and children have been advised to exercise special caution.

Fog hits Delhi airport, 6 flights cancelled

Severe cold coupled with dense fog has hampered air traffic in the national capital. Visibility levels at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) were recorded extremely low this morning, severely disrupting flight operations.

According to the data, a total of 6 flights were cancelled on Tuesday due to the weather and more than 150 flights were operated behind schedule.
