News Topical, Digital Desk : More than 3,500 artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cameras, gunshot sensors and alert systems will be installed on Delhi streets from October 1, an official said on Saturday.

The official said these equipment would be installed as part of the first phase of the 'Safe City' project, which aims to transform the way police work in the national capital.

Equipped with Artificial Intelligence Video Analytics (AIVA), the system will issue alerts on incidents like firing, crimes against women, vehicle theft and discovery of unclaimed items.

The move comes more than two years after the horrific incident in Kanjhawala on the night of December 31, 2022, in which a 20-year-old woman was dragged by a car for more than 12 kilometres, leading to her death. The incident had shocked the entire country and a comprehensive review of surveillance flaws in the city was carried out.

A senior police officer said, "After the Kanjhawala incident, the Home Ministry had directed us to audit the sensitive areas. We found that about 10,000 additional cameras are needed. The project is being implemented in various phases and will first be implemented in high-risk and densely populated areas."

The official said that a total of 3,500 cameras will be installed in the first phase, which will include 6,121 bullet cameras, 1,622 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, 370 Facial Recognition System (FRS) cameras and 1,876 Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras.

Additionally, the project also includes 200 gunshot detection systems and 300 public address systems (speakers), he said.

These will be installed strategically to provide alerts during emergency situations and for public communication, the official said.

The officer said, 'These are not ordinary CCTV cameras. These are based on a system with AI-based video analytics. This system will immediately alert our Integrated Command, Control, Communication and Computer Centre (C4I) located at the police headquarters if any unusual activity is detected.'
