News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Trump is determined to annex Greenland at any cost. He has even angered his allies with this move. Tensions between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney over Greenland have reached a boiling point.

US President Trump plans to install the "Golden Dome" missile defense system in Greenland, but Canada, along with other European countries, has opposed it. Trump warned Canada that if it expands its economic ties with China instead of the US system, Beijing could "swallow" it within a year.

It's worth noting that recently in Davos, Switzerland, Canada announced a major trade deal with China and raised questions about Trump's missile defense system. On January 17, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new trade agreement with China.

Agreement with China

Carney said the agreement will open markets for Canadian businesses and workers. "We've reached a new trade agreement with China – opening up more than $7 billion in export markets for Canadian workers and businesses," Carney wrote in a post on X.

Seeing the growing closeness between Canada and China, Trump got angry and said about the 'Golden Dome' to be installed in Greenland that it will protect not only America but also Canada, whereas Canadian PM Carney has described China as a more 'trustworthy' partner than America.

The Golden Dome will protect Canada

"Canada is against putting a Golden Dome on Greenland, even though the Golden Dome would protect Canada. Yet Canada voted to trade with China, which will 'take them over' in the first year," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Earlier on Wednesday, during his address at the 56th annual summit of the WEF, Trump criticized Canadian PM Carney, saying that Canada should be more "grateful" to the US for the "freebies" it receives, including security protection. He also said that his plan to build a "Golden Dome" missile defense system would also provide security to Canada. (With inputs from news agency ANAI)
