News Topical, Digital Desk : China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has rejected the US call for G7 countries to impose tariffs on countries buying oil from Russia and said that war cannot solve problems. He says, "Sanctions only complicate them."

Wang Yi said this while responding to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant, in which he said that the G-7 ministers should impose sanctions on countries importing oil from Russia to stop the Ukraine war. Wang Yi said, “China does not participate in wars or plan wars, but China encourages peace talks and promotes political solutions to important issues through dialogue.”

What did China say about the Ukraine war?

"China is a responsible major country and has one of the best records on peace and security issues," Wang said during talks with his Slovenian counterpart Tanja Fajon on Saturday, official media reported.

"War cannot solve problems, and sanctions will only complicate them," Wang said, according to state news agency Xinhua, adding that China insists on resolving international disputes through dialogue and consultation.

What was said from America's side?

A US Treasury Department statement on Saturday said that during talks with G-7 finance ministers, Finance Minister Besant reiterated President Donald Trump's call to the G-7 countries that if they are truly committed to ending the war in Ukraine, then they should join the US in imposing tariffs on countries buying oil from Russia.

Besant's statement did not name any country, but the US has often accused India and China of buying Russian oil without charging Beijing for it.
