This study published in The Lancet Regional Health, Southeast Asia, revealed that if oral health is not taken care of properly, it increases the risk of many serious diseases. Therefore, teeth and gums should be cleaned daily. Cleaning does not only mean avoiding cavities or bad breath, but also taking care of overall health.

According to the study, if the oral health is poor, it can lead to fatal diseases like cancer,  heart disease , diabetes, complications during pregnancy and even Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, it is important to know that to stay healthy, it is also important to take care of oral health.

The connection between oral health and cancer

According to cancer specialists Dr. Abhishek Shankar and Dr. Vaibhav Sahni, who conducted this study,  the risk of cancer, especially head and neck cancer,  increases due to poor oral health. Actually, harmful bacteria like Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia present in the mouth cause cancer.

How to take care of oral health?

To take proper care of oral health, brush twice a day.

  • Use the right brushing technique. Avoid brushing too vigorously as this can cause damage.
  • Flossing is also very important to maintain good oral health. It cleans those parts where the brush cannot reach.
  • You can also use mouthwash to keep your teeth and gums clean.
  • Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks, as sugar promotes the growth of harmful bacteria.
  • To maintain oral health, drink plenty of water, which will produce more saliva and help fight bacteria.
  • Avoid using the same toothbrush for a long time. Change it every 3-4 months or when the bristles get worn out.
  • Avoid smoking or tobacco. This increases the risk of gum disease, oral cancer and bad breath.
