News Topical, Digital Desk : Knee pain while climbing stairs, constant stiffness in the back, and the fear of breaking a bone with even a slight stumble. These were once considered normal after menopause, but AIIMS has highlighted new approaches to this problem.

According to this new study, this pain and weakness in bones is not only due to lack of hormones, its real root is hidden in the intestine. After menopause, when estrogen hormone decreases in the body, it affects the immune system of the intestine. This increases inflammation in the intestines, this inflammation gradually weakens the bones by hollowing them out. Related research shows that probiotic bacteria like 'Lactobacillus acidophilus' (good bacteria, which keeps the intestines healthy and improves digestion) are helpful in controlling this process.

The risk of fractures may be reduced

This research was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Rupesh Kumar Srivastava, Additional Professor at the Translational Osteoimmunology and Immunoporosis Lab at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Dr. Rupesh Kumar Srivastava explains that when inflammation in the intestines is not controlled, the body is unable to stop the process of bone loss. Even a minor injury or fall increases the risk of fractures. However, if intestinal inflammation is controlled, the process of bone breakdown can be effectively stopped.

Something similar happens in cases of osteoporosis. They have called it immunoporosis, or the immunology of osteoporosis. In the future, osteoporosis treatment will not be limited to calcium, hormones, or medications. The gut microbiome and immune balance will also become crucial components of treatment. According to Dr. Rupesh Srivastava, probiotics improve the balance of immune cells in the gut. Maintaining a healthy gut will have repercussions for bones, immunity, and overall health.
