News Topical, Digital Desk : An important hearing was held in the Delhi High Court in the year 2020 on the bail plea filed regarding the alleged big conspiracy in the Delhi riots case. During the hearing of the case, Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta said that if you are doing something against the country, then you should remain in jail until you are proven guilty or you are acquitted.
The intention was to embarrass the country - SG Tushar Mehta
SG Mehta alleged that this case is not just a normal riot but a well-planned conspiracy to defame the nation. He said that the riots started during the visit of the then US President to India so that India could be embarrassed globally.
During the hearing in Delhi High Court, SG Tushar Mehta argued that Sharjeel Imam, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Shifa ur Rehman, Atar Khan, Mohammad Salim Khan, and Gulfisha Fatima, along with other accused, were in touch with each other and were carrying out the entire conspiracy through WhatsApp groups.
He said that this was a pre-planned violence whose timing was also decided deliberately. Sharjeel Imam had said that we have four weeks, we have to shake Delhi. These words cannot be of any ordinary movement.
Attempt to tarnish India's image at the international level: SG
Tushar Mehta in the Delhi High Court, citing foreign media reports like The Guardian, said that looking at the coverage of these riots, it is clear that the intention of the accused was to embarrass India at the international level.
Arguing in the Delhi High Court, he said that this was not just a protest against the law. This was an anti-national conspiracy. Many people in the WhatsApp group did not even know that this was not just a protest against the law but a violent plan.
There was a complete preparation to spoil the atmosphere in Delhi.
In the Delhi High Court, SG Tushar Mehta also mentioned a slingshot used during the riots, which he described as a large iron structure that can be operated by four people and was used to throw stones, bricks, acid bombs and petrol bombs. He described it as a weapon of violence, not a toy for children.
Strong opposition to bail of the accused
In Delhi High Court, SG Tushar Mehta, citing the order of another bench earlier denying bail to Umar Khalid, said that this is like a terrorist act and not a normal bailable case. This is a conspiracy to divide the country into two parts.
Arguing in the court, he also said that some of the accused had SIM cards on fake documents and white money was converted into black money which is contrary to normal financial crimes.
Delhi High Court reserves decision
A bench of Justice Navin Chawla and Justice Shalinder Kaur in the Delhi High Court has reserved its decision on the bail pleas of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Khalid Saifi, Atar Khan, Shifa ur Rehman, Mohammad Salim Khan and Gulfisha Fatima. The hearing on the bail plea of accused Shadab Ahmed will now be held on Thursday at 4 pm. The court has asked all the parties to submit their written arguments in three days.
