News Topical, Digital Desk : The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to discontinue the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for issuing FASTags to all new cars, jeeps and vans from February 1, 2026, to enhance public convenience and eliminate the hassles faced by highway users post activation.
"This reform will provide major relief to millions of common road users who were facing inconvenience and delay due to KYV requirements after FASTag activation despite having valid vehicle documents," the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement.
In which cases will it not be necessary?
For existing FASTags already issued for cars, KYV will no longer be required as a routine requirement. It will only be required in specific cases where complaints are received, such as loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or misuse. In the absence of any complaints, no KYV will be required for existing car FASTags.
When will FASTag activation be allowed?
According to the revised rules, FASTag activation will be permitted only after the vehicle details are verified with the VAHAN database. The previous system of post-activation verification has been discontinued. Where vehicle details are not available on VAHAN, issuing banks will be required to verify the details using the Registration Certificate (RC) before activation, for which they will be solely responsible.
FASTags sold through online channels will also be activated only after they have been fully verified by banks. These measures ensure that all vehicles are verified upfront, eliminating the need for repeated follow-ups with customers after FASTag activation.
