On January 21, a research was published in America's prestigious medical journal 'JAMA Network Open', in which it was found that people who use AI tools and chatbots excessively have more symptoms of depression and anxiety than others.  

How was this research done?

The authenticity of this research is based on its data. Researchers conducted an online survey of 20,847 American adults between April and May 2025. Participants were asked how often they used generative AI and chatbots. To accurately measure their mental state, a standard tool called the PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) was used, which helps assess levels of depression.

The surprising results of the study

  • Depression levels – People who used AI daily or frequently had a significantly higher incidence of low to moderate depression .
  • Anxiety and irritability – Such people were found to be associated with not only sadness but also mental problems like nervousness and irritability .
  • Causes and consequences – However, the researchers clarified that this study only shows a connection; it does not completely prove that AI is the sole cause of these diseases.

This study is significant because it marks the first time such a large-scale, scientific study has examined the relationship between AI use and mental health. It warns us that while technology is solving our problems, it is also impacting our emotions and mental health.
