News Topical, Digital Desk : A software engineer was found dead in her rented home in Bengaluru a week ago. Investigators have now revealed that an 18-year-old man tried to have sex with her, and she was killed when she resisted.

Sharmila DK, 34, was found dead on January 3. The tech employee, who worked at Accenture, lived in a rented apartment in Subramanya Layout, Ramamurthy Nagar. Initially, it was suspected that she died of suffocation after a fire, but police have now determined it was a murder.

How was the murder revealed?

After the body was discovered, police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194(3)(iv) of the Indian Penal Code (BNSS) and began an investigation. Using scientific methods and technical evidence, the police identified the suspect, identified as Karnal Kurai, who lived in the house next door to the victim's home.

Upon questioning, Kurai reportedly confessed to the crime. He told police that he entered the woman's home through a sliding window on January 3rd at around 9 p.m. with the intention of soliciting sexual favors. When the victim resisted, he forcibly held her mouth and nose until she lost consciousness. The victim sustained injuries and bleeding during the scuffle.

Set fire before fleeing the house

In an attempt to destroy evidence, the accused placed the victim's clothes and other incriminating material on a mattress in the bedroom and set them on fire before fleeing the scene, police said. He also stole the victim's mobile phone as he fled.

Based on the confession and evidence, a case has been registered against the accused under sections 103(1) (murder), 64(2), 66, and 238 (destruction of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further investigation is underway.
