As soon as he returned to Delhi from China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the phone. PM Modi discussed the situation arising due to rain and floods in Punjab with CM Bhagwant Mann. PM Modi has assured CM Mann of all possible help and support to the state.
CM Mann had written a letter to PM Modi
The floods in Punjab have wreaked havoc. Due to this, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had written a letter to Prime Minister Modi on Sunday demanding immediate release of pending funds of Rs 60,000 crore from the Center. Mann had also appealed for amendment in the rules of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) so that the affected farmers can be given compensation of at least Rs 50,000 per acre.
The issue of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana was also raised
In a letter to PM Modi, CM Mann also said that the central government has recently cancelled projects worth Rs 828 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in Punjab, which may affect the rural connectivity of the state.
Many villages of Hoshiarpur submerged in flood
Heavy rains led to flooding in some villages in Hoshiarpur district on Sunday, while the Kapurthala district administration issued an alert and appealed to the people of Sultanpur Lodhi area to move to safer places in view of the rising water level in the Beas river due to continuous rains in the upper hilly areas.
Holiday declared in schools
The state government has extended the closure of all schools till September 3. Earlier, the government had declared holidays in schools from August 27 to 30. The Patiala district administration has advised people not to go near the banks of Ghaggar and Tangri rivers in view of the rain.
