News Topical, Digital Desk : The Kalava is not just a red thread; in Hinduism, it is called "Raksha Sutra." It is mandatory to tie it during any puja or religious ritual. It is believed that tying the Kalava maintains the sanctity of the act and protects us from negative energy. However, its full benefits are only reaped when it is tied with the proper rituals.

In which hand should the Kalava be tied?

According to Hindu beliefs, the rules for tying the sacred thread on the hands of men and women differ. Men and unmarried women should always tie the sacred thread on their right hand, as the right hand holds special significance in auspicious ceremonies. For married women, tying the sacred thread on their left wrist is considered auspicious. It is believed that after marriage , a woman becomes her husband's "Vamangi" (left hand).

Keep these things in mind while tying Kalava

There is a special method of tying Kalava, following which you get auspicious results -

  • While tying the Kalava, a handkerchief or pallu must be kept on the head.
  • Keep a coin (Dakshina) in the fist of the hand in which you are getting the Kalava tied and place your other hand on your head.
  • Kalava should always be wrapped around the wrist 3, 5 or 7 times.
  • After getting the Kalava tied, give the coin or money kept in your fist to the person tying the Kalava as Dakshina.

Chant these mantras

There is also a provision to chant a special mantra while tying the Kalava, which is as follows -

"Yen Baddho Bali Raja Danavendro Mahabalah.
Ten Twan Abhibadhnami Rakshe Ma Chal Ma Chal."

When should the Raksha Sutra be removed?

Along with tying the Kalava, there are some rules for removing it as well, which should not be ignored at all -

  • Tuesday and Saturday are considered the best days to open the old Kalava with hands .
  • Generally, after 21 days, the old Kalava should be removed and a new one should be tied.
  • The removed Kalava should never be tied again.
  • Never make the mistake of throwing old threads in the garbage or anywhere else.
  • You can flow the old Raksha Sutra in clean flowing water or keep it under a Peepal tree.
