News Topical, Digital Desk : The US blocked Afghanistan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi's previously planned visit to Pakistan. It did not approve the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) travel ban exemption, due to which Amir Khan had to cancel this trip.
According to the Dawn report, Muttaqi was scheduled to visit Pakistan on August 4 as part of recent efforts to improve relations between Kabul and Islamabad. Recently, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited Kabul.
UNSC has imposed sanctions on Afghanistan's Foreign Minister
Citing diplomatic sources, Dawn said that since Afghanistan's foreign minister is subject to international sanctions, he is barred from travelling abroad without a special exemption from the UN Sanctions Committee, established under UN Security Council Resolution 1988 (2011) to monitor travel bans, asset freezes and arms embargoes on individuals involved.
Why did America not grant immunity to Aamir Khan Muttaqi?
The US put off its decision until the last minute and eventually refused to grant the waiver, effectively cancelling the visit. The US decision is believed to have been influenced by concerns about the Taliban government's growing closeness to China. When asked in a recent briefing whether the US had blocked Muttaqi's visit, the State Department said, “We do not comment on rumors.”
However, Pakistan's Foreign Office did not directly confirm the US role. At a media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan told reporters that some procedural issues were being worked out and added that no official date had been set for Muttaqi's visit.
