News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the United States had carried out powerful airstrikes against Islamic State ( ISIS) militants in northwestern Nigeria . Trump claimed that these militants were primarily targeting and brutally killing innocent Christians.

Trump confirmed the attack.

Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against the ISIS terrorist group in northwestern Nigeria, who were primarily targeting innocent Christians and brutally murdering them on a level not seen in centuries.

The president further stated that the US military had carried out "several precision strikes" and warned that more attacks would follow if the killings of Christians continued. He had previously warned the Nigerian government in November that the US would take action if Christians were not protected.

The US Africa Command confirmed that the strikes were carried out at the request of Nigerian authorities and that several militants were killed. The attacks focused on ISIS camps in Sokoto state.

In Nigeria, groups such as ISIS 's West Africa branch ( ISWAP) and Boko Haram have long perpetrated violence in northern regions, including attacks on Christian communities. The Trump administration has prioritized Christian religious freedom and designated Nigeria a "Country of Particular Concern" on this issue.

The action represents a continuation of counterterrorism operations during Trump's second term. Experts say this could impact regional stability, but the Nigerian government has welcomed the cooperation.
