News Topical, Digital Desk : "Cancer" isn't just a word, it's a fear that shakes any family to its core. When a child overcomes this serious illness and becomes cancer-free, it's a joyous beginning for the entire family. But have you ever wondered what life is like for these children after treatment is complete? Until now, very little information was available on this topic in India.
94.5% of children who have defeated cancer are living a normal life.
Now, some very comforting and encouraging news has emerged. India's first nationwide registry tracking the health of children who have survived childhood cancer has released its important report. According to this study, the survival rate for children after completing cancer treatment is 94.5 percent. This statistic offers great hope to parents whose children are going through this difficult time.
Big victory against cancer
This important study was conducted by a team of researchers from AIIMS and the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre in New Delhi. The team examined data from 20 different centers across the country on 5,419 children who had been diagnosed with cancer before the age of 18 and were completely cured after treatment. Clear survival data was available for 5,140 of these children at the time of the study.
40% of cases are diagnosed as 'acute leukemia'
The report states that the most common cancer type among these children was acute leukemia (40.9 percent). Regarding treatment methods, chemotherapy was used in 94.7 percent of these cases. Surgery was used in 30 percent of cases, and radiotherapy in 26.3 percent.
Even after defeating cancer, vigilance is necessary.
While the 94.5 percent survival rate over five years is reassuring, the report also offers a warning for the future. The study suggests that many children who overcome cancer may continue to face health problems months or years after completing their treatment. However, it is heartening to note that 89.9 percent of children who complete primary treatment are completely free of these complications and live healthy lives.
