News Topical, Digital Desk : The Nepal government lifted the ban on social media apps. The decision was taken late last night as protests led by the youth of Zengi turned violent, leading to clashes with the police and the death of 19 people.
Nepal's Communications, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung announced that the government has withdrawn its previous decision to ban social media sites.
'The government has no regrets about the ban on social media'
"The government has already decided to open up social media keeping in mind the demand of Gen-Z," the minister said after an emergency cabinet meeting. However, Gurung also said that the government has no regrets over its previous decision to shut down social media platforms.
The government made this request to Gen-G
He said, "Since protests were being carried out using this issue as an excuse, it has been decided to reopen social media sites." Gurung also requested the 'Gen Z' group to withdraw their protests.
The cabinet has also formed an inquiry committee to investigate today's violence. It has been given 15 days to prepare a report. During the cabinet briefing, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had said that X, one of the banned social media platforms, had responded in a manner that insulted Nepal's national sovereignty.
