News Topical, Digital Desk : Pakistan was already upset with India's retaliatory action Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Sindh started burning due to the Cholistan Canal Project. People of Punjab and Sindh provinces became each other's enemies. Highways were closed. Petrol pumps were looted.

The house of Minister of State for Home Affairs Ziaul Hassan Lanjar (Sindh home minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar) was burnt down and two people were killed. This was not a normal protest in Pakistan's Sindh province, it was an open rebellion against Pakistan's state policy.

Now the questions are what is the Cholistan Canal Project, why is this project being opposed, at what cost will the project be completed and what is Pakistan's intention behind this project? Let us tell you the answers to all these questions...

What is the Cholistan Canal Project?

The Indus River is considered the lifeline of Pakistan. The Pakistan government and army have started the 'Cholistan Canal Project' to take the water of the Indus River to the Cholistan desert of Punjab so that the land of the Cholistan desert can be made suitable for farming. Under this project, six canals of 176 kilometers length are to be built.

What is PAK's intention behind the Cholistan Canal Project?

Actually, the real motive of Pakistan behind the Cholistan Canal project is to stop the water flowing to Sindh province. People from Punjab dominate the government, army and administration of Pakistan. The attitude of the rulers of Pakistan towards provinces like Sindh and Balochistan has always been indifferent and second-rate.

This is the reason why the intention of the Pakistan government and the army is to stop the water available to the people of Sindh in the southern province itself. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Asim Munir together have hastily given the green signal to the Cholistan Canal Project. However, experts are also raising questions on this project.

Why is the project being opposed?

In Sindh province, agriculture, farmers and livelihood of lakhs of people depend on Indus river. Punjab will benefit from Cholistan Canal project, but Sindh will not get its share of water.

That is, if the water of Sindh river is diverted to Punjab, there can be a shortage of water in Sindh province, drought can occur, which can ruin their agriculture and crops. People can crave for drinking water and slowly Sindh, which is currently green, can become a desert.

The lifestyle of the people of Sindh will be affected by the Cholistan Canal Project. That is why the farmers, common people, political parties, religious organizations, lawyers and social workers are opposing this project. The people of Sindh took to the streets to stop this project.

It is being said that Sindh province will also get the flood water of Sutlej. Experts say that increasing dependence on flood water will be the biggest mistake of the Pakistan government.

How much will the project cost?

The Cholistan Canal Project is in the southern Punjab province of Pakistan. This area is adjacent to Rajasthan of India. In this project, a 176 km long canal will be built and its three sub-canals will also be built.

The water storage capacity of this project will be 4,120 cusecs. This canal will be completed at a cost of about 67 billion rupees (Indian currency). Pakistan wants to complete the Cholistan Canal Project by the year 2030.
