News Topical, Digital Desk : A team of mountaineers, scientists and doctors will climb an unnamed peak in the remote Tso-Moriri region of Leh district of Ladakh as part of an expedition. Along with this, this 6,105 meter high peak will be symbolically named 'Abhaya'. Last year, a female trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata. The team has decided to name this peak in memory of the female doctor. The expedition named Project Seema (Sustainable Empowerment and Exploration in Mountainous Areas) aims to connect mountain exploration with social, scientific and developmental initiatives. The group will also study glaciers, rivers, lakes, agriculture and climate change in the challenging ecosystem of the Himalayas. 

A peak in Ladakh will be named Abhaya

Senior mountaineer Debashish Biswas, who is leading the expedition, told PTI-Bhasha over the phone from Leh, "Her (female doctor) death shook the conscience of the whole country. We want to honor her by dedicating one of these unnamed peaks to her and hence, it will be named after her symbolic name 'Abhaya'. The team, which has set up base camp at Korzok Phu, comprises eminent professors, researchers, climate experts, medical professionals and social development workers from across India.

She was murdered after being gang-raped in RG Kar Medical College

It is worth noting that a trainee student was gang-raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College. There was anger in the whole country after this case came to light. Doctors protested on a large scale regarding this. The main accused of this incident is currently behind the bars of the jail and legal action is going on against him.
