The population of Tuvalu, a country made up of 9 coral islands and atolls, is just 11,000. This island is just 2 meters above sea level. In such a situation, the migration of people from Tuvalu is considered to be the world's first planned migration.
2 islands drowned
Due to its low elevation, Tulavu is often prone to floods and storms. According to reports, 2 out of the 9 islands of Tuvalu have already sunk and the remaining islands are on the verge of sinking.
According to NASA,
In 2023, the sea level around Tuvalu rose by 15 centimetres compared to 15 years ago. In such a situation, there is a possibility that Tuvalu may sink completely in the next 25 years i.e. by 2050.
Agreement with Australia
In 2023, Tuvalu and Australia signed the Faleapili Agreement. Under this, 280 Tuvalu citizens will be granted permanent Australian citizenship every year. The first phase of applications was seen between July 16 and July 18.
More than 8 thousand people applied
According to the Australian High Commission, 8,750 people had applied. Out of which 280 people have been selected through ballot. The selection process was completed on 25 July.
