
Bangladesh's interim government is making all-out efforts to bring back ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and others from India under the extradition treaty.
In this regard, Bangladeshi government's home adviser Lieutenant General (Retired) Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for the arrest of more than 100 accused on behalf of the interim government of Bangladesh.
ICT issued warrant
Bangladesh's ICT has issued arrest warrants for Sheikh Hasina and several former cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civilian officials for 'crimes against humanity and genocide'.
"We are trying to bring back those who are under trial in the ICT on charges of crimes against humanity," the home adviser was quoted as saying by the state-run BSS news agency.
Sheikh Hasina living in India
- Let us tell you that Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since August 5 last year after large-scale violence in the country. With her arrival in India, the 16-year-old government of the Awami League also collapsed.
- Last year, Dhaka sent a diplomatic note to India seeking the extradition of Sheikh Hasina. The home adviser said they are arresting those living in the country while efforts are on to bring back others living abroad.
Bangladesh has hope from Interpol
"The main person is not in the country. How will we arrest those who are abroad?" he said, adding that legal efforts are underway to bring them back.
When asked about the progress in issuing red notices against them, police chief Baharul Alam said he hoped Interpol would soon issue notices against the wanted individuals on behalf of the ICT. He said, 'Since the red notice has been issued by the ICT, the host country is responsible for arresting them.
