Scientists from India as well as abroad were trying to find out the reason behind the fact that the water of the Ganga River does not get spoiled even if it is kept for many years. Scientists were also trying to find out why no disease or epidemic spreads from the Ganga River despite millions of people taking a dip in it every year on many religious occasions. Even during the last Kumbh Mela, these scientists had gone there and collected samples. Scientists from the country's big institute, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), located in Nagpur, have discovered this secret.
How does Ganga remain pure?
Scientists have found out that the Ganga water contains self-cleaning bacteriophages, which prevent the water from getting polluted. This information was given by Dr. Krishna Khairnar, a scientist at the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), during an exclusive interview with India TV.
Vigyan Ko has divided its research into three phases-:
1) Gaumukh to Haridwar
2) Haridwar to Patna
3) Patna to Gangasagar
Three elements of self-purification
Dr. Krishna Khairnar has told that the team of scientists started their investigation by collecting samples of Gangajal before the rains and once after the rains. The samples collected by the scientists include Gangajal, soil from the banks of Ganga, and sand. Scientists have discovered the element due to which the water of Ganga does not become dirty. Scientists have discovered that three elements of self-purification are hidden in Ganga. Scientists had also collected samples of Gangajal for research during the last Kumbh.
Bacteriophages are found in Ganga water
NEERI scientist Dr Krishna Khairnar said that bacteriophages are found in Ganga water, which protect it from getting polluted. Hence, their conservation is needed. NEERI completed the study of the medicinal properties of Ganga river and the reasons related to its flow path in three phases, studying the three seasons. In this, more than 50 places of Ganga river were tested. In this study which lasted for about 2 years, an effort was made to identify the source of the special properties of Ganga water. The scientific team has found germ-killing bacteriophages in Ganga water, which is a kind of virus, which works to fight against diseases caused by these pathogenic bacteria. NEERI scientists have also found dissolved oxygen in Ganga water. It remains almost till the saturation level. Apart from this, up to 20 milliliters of oxygen has been found in Ganga water. Scientists have also discovered terpene salt phytochemical. These are the three elements which prove to be effective in making Ganga clean.
Discovery of special properties in river Ganga
In the first round of research, NEERI scientists conducted research between Gaumukh and Tehri Dam. After this research, the fact was discovered that why Ganga is so pure. In their research, scientists found that bacteria called bacteriophages are found in Ganga water, which do not let the water of Ganga get polluted. Bacteriophages have been found in research from the origin of Ganga to the area of Rishikesh. Bacteriophages are microscopic, which cannot be seen with the eyes. Bacteriophages called bacteriophages destroy the bacteria that pollute water. Scientists researched the samples of Ganga known as Bhagirathi, Alaknanda, Mandakini between Gaumukh and Rishikesh. In scientific research, it was found that Ganga purifies its water on its own. The team of scientists has discovered the special properties found in Ganga river from its origin to Hoogly river. Scientists also tested water samples from Tehri Dam. Team scientist Dr Krishna Khairnar said that for investigation, the team had collected samples up to a depth of 250 metres from the dam site.
Self purifying element in Ganga
Regarding the tests conducted by scientists during Kumbh, Dr. Krishna Khairnar said that self-purifying elements are hidden in the Ganga. During the royal bath during Kumbh, the government makes a lot of arrangements. Crores of people take bath in the Ganga. Even after crores of people take bath, the Ganga purifies itself after some time. The Ganga has the power to clean its dirt. Crores of people take bath together, despite that, the condition of the Ganga looks completely pure and clean at a distance of 5 kilometers from where people take bath. And even at the place where people take bath, the Ganga purifies itself in this way in three to four days. Scientists of NEERI told that in 1896, a scientist named Hacking had also reported that the water of the Ganga performs antibacterial action.
